Mountain Gardens grows more perennial vegetables than any other nursery that we know. We grow most of the plants in Eric Toensmeier’s “Perennial Vegetables,” the comprehensive guide to growing these plants, which are a major staple in any permaculture garden. In this workshop, we will tour the garden to see these plants and discuss their propagation, cultivation, habitat, harvest, & use. Perennial vegetables in our garden include: Apios (American Groundnut), Turkish Rocket, Ostrich Fern, Giant Solomon’s Seal, Bamboo shoots, Oca, Arrowhead, Sea Kale, Good King Henry & Nettles.

This workshop will provide information about Chinese medicinal herbs for growers interested in alternative crops, and for practitioners interested in growing their own herbs. Western NC is ideally suited to growing important Chinese medicinal herbs such as Angelica sinensis – dang gui. Many Chinese medicinal herbs are closely related to herbs in North Carolina’s forests, including Black Cohosh, Solomon’s Seal, Wild Yam, and Ginseng. Mountain Gardens has the largest collection of Chinese medicinal plants in the Eastern US & has been growing them for 25 years.

Wasabi Cultivation
June 30 or July 2 1:30-5pm

Fresh Wasabi roots (imported) are offered on the Internet for $100/lb. Very little is produced in America at present, but Western NC offers ideal conditions. If you have cold, clear running water you may be able to grow this valuable crop. This workshop will cover the basics of site selection and preparation, propagation, and cultivation.

Plants and seeds for sale in our nursery. Come early or stay late to shop.
